Precious few artists have had the opportunity to finish a work started by an internationally acclaimed master of their medium. But three of Canada’s most highly respected playwrights—Morwyn Brebner, Claudia Dey, and Governor General’s award-winner Daniel MacIvor—will undertake to do just that early next year when they put pen to paper to complete three plays using an opening line written by Academy Award-winning British playwright and screenwriter Sir Tom Stoppard.
As if the task were not daunting enough, these playwrights, together with many of Canada’s best directors, designers and actors, have agreed to finish what Stoppard started with one heart-stopping caveat. They will have only twelve hours to create and mount the works: 4 hours for writing, and 8 hours in the hands of three separate creative teams for rehearsal and production. The work will then be presented in front of a live audience expected to include a who’s who of Canada’s top theatre patrons.
one day: three plays is part of the annual fundraising efforts of Necessary Angel Theatre Company, one of Canada’s premiere creation and touring organizations, which has been developing and supporting the original creations of Canadian writers, directors, designers and performers for almost thirty years.
Overseen by Necessary Angel’s award-winning Artistic Director, Daniel Brooks, and hosted by award-winning actor and entertainer Rick Miller (star of Bigger Than Jesus and host of Just for Laughs on ABC), one day: three plays promises to be an evening of sumptuous food and wine, and entertaining, edge-of-your-seat theatre.
The evening includes a three-course dinner with a selection of fine wines. The menu has been assembled by gastronomic guru Lucy Waverman, Globe and Mail food writer and food editor of Food & Drink Magazine. one day: three plays is generously sponsored by BMO Financial.
