Toronto, August 15, 2006 - Necessary Angel Theatre Company is proud to announce the return of Daniel Brooks and Guillermo Verdecchia’s critically acclaimed and landmark play, Insomnia, which has remained one of the most lauded theatrical triumphs in recent memory. Insomnia was first presented by The Augusta Company in 1998 at The Theatre Centre and revived for the Festival de théâtre des amériques in 1999 and will travel this fall to Calgary (opening October 6) and Toronto (opening November 8).

Necessary Angel is pleased to announce the return of three of the four original cast members. Necessary Angel Artistic Director Daniel Brooks revives his role as the central character John F., as do Fiona Highet (as Gwen) and Randy Hughson (as William). They are joined by Colombe Demers, playing Kate. Insomnia is directed by Necessary Angel Artistic Associate Chris Abraham.

All the original designers return: Julie Fox – Set and Costumes (Dora Award for Insomnia); Andrea Lundy – Lighting (Dora Award for Insomnia); and Richard Feren – Sound and Music. Tanya Greve is the Stage Manager.

If you can’t sleep, how can you tell you’re awake? John F. tosses and turns as he wallows in his worst fears…his troubles exacerbated by a failing marriage, a faltering career and an unfinished masterpiece. Then there’s his successful and overbearing brother, not to mention John F.’s unrequited love for his sister-in-law. Casting an hypnotic spell, the play takes us into the restless and anxious soul of not only one man, but of a culture teetering on the brink of catastrophe.

The Toronto Star in 1998 said of Insomnia: “polished…. the production is water-tight. … Brooks and Highet switch places so stealthily…that the effect is almost filmic…. Think of Insomnia as an impressively theatrical nightcap with which to neurotically toast the millennium.”

Insomnia is a joint production with Theatre Junction (Calgary). The play opens at The Grand Theatre in Calgary on October 6th and runs there until October 21st. It transfers to Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto, where it previews November 7th, opens November 8th and runs until November 27th.
