a workshop production of a multi-media mass for a modern age
created and performed by RICK MILLER created and directed
by DANIEL BROOKS
TORONTO, DECEMBER 15, 2003 - Necessary
Angel Theatre Company and WYRD Productions are pleased to
present Rick Miller and Daniel Brooks’ exciting new
one-man show, BIGGER THAN JESUS, at Theatre Passe Muraille,
January 8-11, 2004. Canadian actor Rick Miller has amazed
audiences in three languages, on four continents, and has
created and performed three award-winning solo shows: Slightly
Bent, Art? and the worldwide hit MacHomer (still touring after
eight years). BIGGER THAN JESUS is the first collaboration
between Rick Miller and Necessary Angel’s award-winning
Artistic Director, Daniel Brooks. A multimedia mass for a
modern age, BIGGER THAN JESUS grapples with conflicting opinions
about the thorny crown of Christianity.

2000 years after his death, Jesus of Nazareth and the cross
on which he died continue to be the most potent and controversial
of symbols inspiring both devout worship and incalculable
violence. Through 12 interlocking character portraits (mirroring
12 stages of the Passion), BIGGER THAN JESUS weaves together
the Catholic liturgy, the gospels, and some good old-fashioned
preaching to confront the varying interpretations of Christ
and Christianity.
The creative team for BIGGER THAN JESUS includes
Rick Miller (Co-Creator/Performer), Daniel Brooks (Co-Creator/Director),
Ben Chaisson (Sound Designer/Technical Director), and Beth
Kates (Lighting Designer/ Production and Stage Manager).

First work-shopped, to tremendous audience
and critical acclaim, at the Manitoba Theatre Centre last
April, BIGGER THAN JESUS will be heading back on the road
after its brief Toronto run in January for limited engagements
at the High Performance Rodeo in Calgary (January 21 to 25)
and at Catalyst Theatre in Edmonton (January 28 to February
1).
