Daniel
Brooks Appointed New Artistic Director at Necessary Angel
Theatre Company
Toronto -- Daniel Brooks, one of Canada’s most accomplished
theatre directors and writers, has been named new Artistic
Director of Necessary Angel Theatre Company, today announced
Board President Lynne Patterson.
“Daniel is
one of Canada’s most exciting directing talents,”
says Patterson. “He has a long established reputation
as one of our most visionary theatre artists. We are excited
at the wealth of experience, artistry and vision he will bring
to the Company.”
Brooks succeeds
founding Artistic Director Richard Rose who left the Company
in August to take on the position of Artistic Director at
Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre. Rose founded Necessary Angel
in 1978.
“Necessary
Angel Theatre Company has always been one of the most important,
risk-taking theatre Companies in the country,” says
Brooks. “I am honoured to have this opportunity to build
on its already strong legacy.”
Brooks
has been a mainstay of Canada’s theatre community for
the past 20 years. He has worked as a director, writer, actor
and producer. Some of his creations include Red Tape and 86;
An Autopsy (with Don McKellar and Tracy Wright); The Lorca
Play, House, Here Lies Henry and Monster (all with Daniel
MacIvor); The Noam Chomsky Lectures and Insomnia (with Guillermo
Verdecchia), and most recently The Good Life. His work as
a director includes John Mighton’s Possible Worlds,
Goethe’s Faust, and Beckett’s Endgame.
He has won and
been nominated for many theatre awards. Last year he was the
first recipient of the prestigious Elinore and Lou Siminovitch
Prize in Theatre for directing.
Brooks will formally
take on the position in January 2003. Rose will continue his
association with Necessary Angel this season, directing the
Company’s upcoming World Premiere production of Michael
Lewis MacLennan’s Last Romantics (Feb. 27 – Mar
22, Berkeley Street Theatre) and the remount of the Company’s
international hit Tamara (Apr 1 –13, Graydon Hall Manor)
as part of Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage Theatre
Festival.
