Necessary Angel Theatre
Company announces a single opportunity to revisit Daniel Brooks
and Guillermo Verdecchia’s critically acclaimed play,
Insomnia. First developed in 1997 at the Theatre Centre, presented
in 1998 and revived for the Festival de Theatre des Ameriques
in 1999, Insomnia has remained one of the most critically
lauded triumphs in recent Canadian Theatre history.
If you can’t
sleep, how can you tell you’re awake? John F. tosses
and turns as he wallows in his worst fears…his troubles
exacerbated by a failing marriage, a faltering career and
an unfinished masterpiece. Then there’s his successful
and overbearing brother, not to mention John F.’s unrequited
love for his sister-in-law. Casting an hypnotic spell, the
play takes us into the restless and anxious soul of not only
one man, but a culture teetering on the brink of catastrophe.
Two of the original
cast members reprise their roles: Daniel Brooks as John F
and Tamsin Kelsey as Gwen. They are joined by Laura de Carteret
as Kate and Guillermo Verdecchia as William. The stage manager
is Shauna Janssen.
This is the second
presentation by award-winning writer, director, and actor
Daniel Brooks as the new Artistic Director of Necessary Angel
Theatre Company. Known for his collaborative work with artists
such as Daniel MacIvor, Don McKellar and John Mighton, he
was the inaugural recipient of the Elinor and Lou Siminovitch
Prize for Direction in 2001.
Necessary Angel is
celebrating its 25th anniversary this season as one of Canada’s
most innovative, risk-taking theatre companies. |
